The community of Vavenby, a bedroom community, is located 27 kilometres northeast of the main service centre for the North Thompson Valley, Clearwater. Vavenby is a community of approximately 700 residents. Adjacent to the community lies the North Thompson River, the Yellowhead Highway and the Canadian National Railway.

Recreation in the community consists mainly of outdoor activities. Among these activities are snowmobiling, cross country skiing, horseback riding, hiking, biking and fishing. Numerous lakes are in close proximity with many of them having forestry campgrounds.

Economy in the region centres primarily on forestry, agriculture, and tourism.

The Canfor mill reopened in January 2012 after $24 million in capital upgrades. At that time, a second shift was reopened for a total of 145 jobs restored to the local region.

The community of Vavenby is home to amenities such as the Vavenby Community Hall, a general store, post office, with additional amenitied, such as a general store, also provided in the nearby community of Birch Island.
