Invest in Upper Nicola - Stump Lake - Pennask Lake

British Columbia, Canada

The Upper Nicola region of B.C.'s southern interior is within close proximity to the City of Merritt. The region is home to the Upper Nicola Indian Band, which has 8 reserves, numbered 1 through 8, located in the general vicinity of the Nicola and Douglas Lakes. The two main residential communities are located at Quilchena on Nicola Lake IR #1, and at the west end of Douglas Lake IR #3.

The major employer on the reserve is the Band; however, there are many Band members who earn their livelihood from ranching or ranching related activities. Recently, a joint venture forestry operation was started with the help of a local logging operation. Seasonal employment opportunities now exist in this field for Upper Nicola Band members. Other on reserve members must travel to the community of Merritt and surrounding area to secure employment.

Stump Lake is a lake in the Nicola Country region of the South-Central Interior of B.C., located northeast from the Nicola Lake, which spans approximately 11 kilometres.

Once famous for its huge trout of 15 lbs or better, this lake still produces large fish in the 6 lbs range. Spring and fall are the best fishing seasons with the summer months slowing down because of heat.

The Stump Lake area is home to the Stump Lake Guest Ranch and a private campsite on the east side of the lake. There is also a public day use site and boat launch off Highway 5.

Pennask Lake Provincial Park is a provincial park located on the easternmost heights of the Thompson Plateau, with 25 campsites and day use areas.

The Pennask Lake Provincial Park is a tourist draw, attracting many that wish to enjoy a number of freshwater activities ranging from canoeing to sport fishing.

The area is home to a diverse range of industries including agriculture, forestryenergy and tourism.
